CAN EVERY SCRATCH BE REMOVED?
It depends on the depth.
A piano finish is made up of layers. If a scratch is confined to the upper surface of the finish, it can often be progressively levelled and polished to significantly reduce or remove it. Deeper scratches, particularly those that penetrate through the finish, may require localised filling and refinishing rather than polishing alone.
A useful indication is whether a scratch temporarily disappears when wet. If it does, this can suggest that the damage is within the surface coating and may respond well to polishing. However, every finish and scratch is different, so the safest repair method is assessed individually.
There is always a limit to how much material can safely be removed from an existing piano finish. Our aim is therefore to achieve the best possible improvement while preserving the surrounding original finish. Many scratches can be removed completely or made extremely difficult to detect, while deeper damage may remain slightly visible under certain lighting or viewing angles.
